August 2008 Update to This Website

This is an active website and we monitor a variety of sources for information.

At this time, there is little news to report, but we urge all supporters, loyal Dartmouth alumni and friends of Dartmouth to check back periodically for information.

Current issues of importance for alumni include the College presidential search, efforts by dissident alumni to revise or modify the dismissed lawsuit (see below) and the decision by the Dartmouth Board of Trustees to freeze current membership.

For example, we have learned that one attempt was made by a member of the losing slate in the recent Alumni Association to revise the legal settlement, but the New Hampshire Superior Court denied the motion. We also understand The Hanover Institute, which was responsible for funding the recently settled lawsuit against Dartmouth, has been soliciting funds to further their activity against the College.

Lawsuit Against Dartmouth College is Officially Dismissed

The New Hampshire Superior Court, on June 27, issued an order approving the joint stipulation filed by attorneys for Dartmouth College and the College's Association of Alumni voluntarily dismissing the lawsuit brought by the Association in October 2007.

The dismissal follows the recent election of the Association's new executive committee, all of whom were committed to ending the lawsuit. The eleven executive committee members were elected by a 60 percent majority, with a record 24,900 (38 percent) of Dartmouth's more than 60,000 alumni voting in the election.

The lawsuit was filed in October, 2007 after a 6-3 vote by the Association's previous executive committee. The lawsuit was opposed by the previous president of the Association, Bill Hutchinson '76, as well as the executive committee of the Alumni Council.

Two main groups represent Dartmouth alumni: the Association of Alumni and the Alumni Council. The Dartmouth Association of Alumni's primary role is to run the annual meeting of the Association and related elections. The organization is distinct from the Alumni Council, which acts as principal communications vehicle between alumni and the College. The Council is made up of nearly 120 representatives of Dartmouth's alumni classes, clubs, and affiliated groups, as well as faculty and undergraduate student members.
